In the ever increasingly competitive smartphone and tablet race it seems that bigger is better. Or is it? For many people, having a tablet is seen as a replacement for lugging around a laptop so is having a tablet with the same size screen any better than just using your laptop? I guess that depends if you prefer the Android OS over the OS that is running on your laptop.
Toshiba has just introduced its new Excite 13 tablet that boasts a 13.3 inch screen to replace their Thrive 7 and 10 inch tablets. The new Excite will also run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and have a 1,600 x 900 pixel display which is pretty good for and Android tablet but not as good as an iPad. The display is made from scratch resistant Corning Gorilla Glass too. One other problem with having a large screened tablet is the potential weight problem and the Excite comes in at 2.2 pounds making it feel more like a laptop or at least a netbook.

But if you are looking for features then the Excite may be for you since it offers a quad core Tegra 3 processor with a gig of RAM. Plus you get a 1.3 megapixel camera on the front as well as a 5 megapixel camera on the back. For connectivity you get Micro USB and Micro HDMI ports and a full-size SD card. As for sound you get four SRS Surround speakers. As of now there is no 3G or 4G support so you will need a Wi-Fi connection for your web browsing.
The Excite may be a good tablet for someone who doesn't plan on taking it out of the house too often and prefers to sit on the couch connected to their home wireless connection. It does come with a stand making it easier to position it to watch movies. If you like what the Excite has to offer but want to be more portable then you can always go for the smaller 7.7 or 10 inch versions that have quad core processors as well.
The Excite 13 offers 13 hours of battery life and seven days of stand by and will be here around the middle of June and will cost you around $650 for the 32GB model and $750 for the 64GB model.
